Andalucia is today the district with the biggest number of Ibex, although they differ considerably from their north cousins.

The Ronda Ibex is found in the mountains of Malaga province, close to the city Ronda. It is, without a doubt, the smallest of all four Ibex. Due to the climate (much milder winters than in other parts of the country), the Ronda Ibex can be characterized by the lack of black spots on its coat and shorter fur. The horns are shorter, very rarely reaching 90cm and its thickness is constant for the half of its length, decreasing gradually to the broomed tips. The most wanted trophies of this type of Ibex are the ones with the horns in V shape, resembling those of Alpine Ibex.

The hunting season runs from November till the end of April; the best time is rut in the months of November and December.

Gredos Ibex

Only 2 hours drive from Madrid we find the Sierra de Gredos. This beautiful mountain range with peaks reaching up to 2600m offers a variety of terrains, ecosystems and climates with a wealth of wildlife and nature, some of it unique to this area. In gredos we find the biggest population of Spanish Ibex.

The Gredos Ibex is slightly higher in weight than their brothers from Beceite, Ronda and Sierra Nevada. It has an average height at the withers between 60 and 80 cm. It is also the darkest of all four types. Typically, the horns are lyre-shaped with a pronounced curve and a spiral turn of more than 180 degrees. Horn thickness decreases progressively from the base to the very thin tip.

In Gredos it is very typical, especially in spring, to see herds of 60 to 80 animals. In autumn and winter the males usually go alone and can travel great distances in search of females.

Gredos Ibex hunting is the most difficult of all four ibex in Spain. In winter the cold, snow, wind, high altitudes and rocky terrain makes it a challenge. But it´s definitely worth it, as a magnificent trophy will compensate all your efforts.

Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada Ibex, called also South-Western Ibex is hunted in the mountains of Sierra Nevada National Park, in the south of Spain, between the cities of Granada and Almeria.

This Ibex is smaller in size than its northern cousins. Generally is characterized by a huge diversity of horn types not only in the same region but also of animals from the same herd. Some of the trophies may have slightly rounded shape and have a nickname of “Mouflon type”.

During summer and autumn the Ibex climb high the mountains of Sierra Nevada in search of food, and can be spotted over 2.400 meters above sea level. In winter when the snow covers the peaks they can go down almost to the sea level.

The hunting season is from October till the end of May, and the rut time is November-December. Just like other types of Ibex, this one is also hunted by stalking. Depending on your physical conditions, you may want to come in winter (more difficult) or spring (less exhausting) in order to fully enjoy your hunting in Spain experience.

Officially, The CIC recognizes only two subspecies of Ibex in Spain. Nevertheless, it is commonly accepted to devide the Spanish Ibex into four groups, depending on their location: Gredos Ibex, Beceite Ibex, Ronda Ibex, Sierra Nevada Ibex. Each of them is slightly different.

The Tortosa -Beceite Ibex gets its name from the region in eastern Spain. It´s second largest of all four and can weight up to 110kg. In winter the male fur is almost black and in the summer it´s light brown in colour. What mainly distinguishes this type of Ibex are its horns that expands to the sides like an airplane wings. The males can live up to 15-16 years.

Like many other animals, The Spanish Ibex lives in separate herds. Adult males always go in separate groups, and males together with young males in a different ones. Only during the rut season the males approach the females. Unlike the Gredos Ibex, the Beceite type can be easily spotted in spring close to almond bushes.
